Women
Women will save the world. I have to think sometimes I too could be a radical power jumping up and down on a soapbox, tattered and wild, slip showing, pillbox held in place by electric netting. Women will save the world I think and I want to say it to the staid hausfrau next to me who would see me as a radical raver, eyes aflame because I’d seen it again. I saw men huffing and butting like two cocks in a chicken yard, making advances with elbow shoves. I don’t know what they were fighting about, one was black, one was white. Now there’s a good reason for starters, but they were at it again and a gentle woman companion, a black woman, stepped between them saying, “Oh come now. Stop it! Please stop it! There is no need.” And finally they stopped rather than brawl. And then it was, I thought again, women will save this world. A mild example but it’s all the same thing isn’t it...push and shove, hard hand, fist, a gun, a bit of napalm, an unjust law setting into action a push, a shove, hard hand, a fist, a gun, a bit of napalm, at each other's throats. Like a pack of mongrel dogs.
The Way
In my life I have done all I can to demonstrate that the way of peace, the way of love and nonviolence is the more excellent way. So I say to you, walk with the wind, brothers and sisters, and let the spirit of peace and the power of everlasting love be your guide. Representative John Lewis
